When I first started taking clients, newborns really intimidated me. Not for a lack of love or excitement about capturing them or the new family, but in the simple fact that newborns are the blankest of blank portrait canvases. Soft and round, curled and supple, these incredible little bodies are total perfection, but lacked the line and shadow I am used to photographing with. My saving grace in those early sessions was what what drove me to start my business in the first place…the family unity and their energy, love and affection for one another. Quickly I stopped trying to replicate what others were photographing and I just started moving about the story set before me. Mama's hands intwined in babies feet, the pacing daddy soothing his newborn child, brothers and sisters curious about their new friend. Blessed have I been to watch faces changing from pride, to love, to concern, to fatigue, to gratitude like beautiful shadows on the wall, and me there to take note.
Like every artist, style is both innate and cultivated. For me, there has been no better cultivation of my art than becoming a mother myself and living the story I saw so many others tell. Anticipating the sleep, the hunger, rising and falling with the quiet bonding moments and the laughter that always erupts when I ask parents to look at each other is a place that feels like home now. What was once a session I shied away from, I now love above most others. Its finding the stride and the light, but also growing as a person that has me in love with sessions like this one.
This family is adorably in love and their beautifully decorated nest made for a special morning. Say hello to little Beau and his sweet family.
